Our BIG project - a Community Play

ork is taking place on what will be a two-year project for Looping the Loop. We are making a community play based around the famous showman 'Lord' George Sanger and the world of circus. Sanger (1825 - 1911) began what is now Dreamland in Margate. He built the 2,000-seat Royal Palace Theatre in Ramsgate High Street. He was an entrepreneur, a survivor, he toured England and Europe with wild animals and a big top.
THE WORK SO FAR
Supported by Arts Council England, we have worked with artists and people across Thanet over six months up to April 2023. Working with playright Fin Kennedy, we are developing the narrative for the play, the story we will tell and how the past reflects into the future and how people locally respond to the notion of Survival, Wonder and Pride.
We invited an actor, dancer, musician and visual artist to develop four workshops each which were placed in a variety of places and groups, from Ellington Park in Ramsgate to the Quarterdeck Youth Centre in Margate and the Coastal Choir in Broadstairs. Find out more about the artists as you read down....
We have been building partnerships to help us make what will be our biggest single piece of work so far. In July 2023 we begin our second stage of developing the play.
THE ARTISTS
Fin: Fin Kennedy is an award-winning playwright, producer and founder of Applied Stories, a digital production company making place-based audio drama. Fin’s plays for theatre and radio are produced in the UK and internationally; he has a particular specialism in co-creating plays with young people and communities. Applied Stories designs site-specific audio drama experiences for museums, archives, schools, councils and community groups, in the belief that stories can foster positive social change, by changing how we view one another. www.appliedstories.co.uk
Vicki: As a working-class artist, I have experienced barriers to art, both real and also perceived and self-imposed through lack of confidence. I was given an opportunity in my 50s with a community arts company and this is why I am passionate that the creative arts should be accessible to all and why I am so excited to be working with Looping the Loop who share that belief. My art practice involves elements of spontaneity and play, and just having a go without worrying whether you are doing it the ‘right way’.
Tom: "I'm aN actor, writer and theatre maker. I love to find out 'how it feels to be you...'. 'You' can be anyone or thing and I think this is what makes theatre magical - the shared experiences of enquiry, exploration and feeling together. My work has taken me to London (The National Theatre, The Globe & The Donmar Warehouse), on tour and all over the world and I am delighted to have the chance to work locally, in and with the local community with Looping the Loop."
Jodie: "I am a choreographer, movement director, facilitator and performer and I'm lead artist at Jodie Cole Dance. I'm a working class woman living with Complex PTSD, inspired by the healing powers of movement to cross social divides. I celebrate difference, use movement to unite experience & bring performance to unexpected places. I work internationally in theatre, in communities, on large scale site-specific projects and I have extensive experience teaching in SEND settings. I am delighted to explore creativity in our community through dance, movement, play and joy."
Edward: I am a musician, a musical director and music educator. I have a strong belief in the power of music. It has the ability to influence our moods, inspire energy and remind us of cherished memories, it shapes our identity and allows us to express our true selves. I have directed and performedwith orchestras, choral societies, chamber choirs, bands and community choirs. One of my passions is musical theatre and I have worked on numerous shows as musical director. I also have extensive experience in music education. I am excited to be working with Looping the Loop on this project.
