Opera Mash Up, Taylor Hall, St Lawrence School 2016
Opera For All was run by Looping the Loop across Thanet, in partnership with Garsington Opera, for three years. Six schools (three primary, three secondary) spent a week each year working with artists from Garsington. Students learned scenes to perform with the professional artists and older students wrote their own scenes. Over 700 young people a year took part and 150 performed to audiences of over 300 people in finale 'Mash Up' events. The operas were Cosi Fan Tutti (2015), Eugene Onegin (2016), Semele (2017). |
Looping the Loop runs a range of projects to support and engage people across Thanet. We cluster work in three main areas: Community, Artist Development and Performance. Aiming to make significant impact, opening minds and stretching the imagination through working with exceptional performances and facilitators, our current projects are:
#MadVentureVan
A customised 70's caravan creating an imaginative space for plays, workshops and events. The project is developing its work beyond Thanet and hopes to visit festivals and events in the South East for 2021.
We Are Nearly Normal
A street theatre company specialising in choreographed close encounters with the public in spaces as diverse as retail parks and sandy beaches
Young People's Programme
For three years we have run Drama Clubs in primary schools and as we continue to provide this specialist service, we also now run a weekly Youth Theatre (the School of Acting) for Theatre Royal Margate, working with groups aged 8-11yrs and 12-18yrs.
TNT - Theatre Network Thanet
Over seven years we have been working with groups, community teams and organisations across Thanet to ensure that live performance is part of the mix in this 'cultural hotspot' of Kent. We have employed and supported as many artists as possible to have opportunities to work and expand their craft. We realised that without a network, many felt alone and had few external resources to count on, so in 2018 we established TNT as a monthly meeting place for artists in any aspect of live performance.
FLEX Workshops
As a group led by practising artists and theatre-makers we are aware that keeping the creative 'muscle' working is vital, and especially difficult during periods of no employment. FLEX workshops run on an evening every week, either as one-off sessions or as a short series addressing a specific technique or aspect of being a performer.
Festivals
Looping the Loop produces festivals in collaboration with Battersea Arts Centre's Collaborative Touring Network. You can find out details of the twelve festivals between 2013 - 2019 at ARCHIVE [link]. We are currently developing plan for a new Three Towns/Three Days festival which was due to launch in 2020 but has been postponed to summer 2021 because of the Covid-19 epidemic.
Past projects have included:
Opera For All with Garsington Opera (2015 - 2017)
Moving Stories for Refugee Week (2018)
Roundabout with Paines Plough/Theatre Royal Margate/Newington Big Local (2016 - 2019 )
Scratch The Sky at Turner Contemporary (2015)
